German Secret Weapons of World War II…

LIST of GERMAN DIVISIONS in WORLD WAR II – (G.25th.P.D)

25th Panzer Division (Germany)

The 25th Panzer Division was a German tank formation during World War II. It was one of the many understrength panzer divisions the Germans formed during the last years of the war.

Division Insignas

History…

Highlights…

  • 1942-1943 Training and garrison activities in Norway
  • 1943 Further training in France, battle of Zhitomir
  • 1944 Western Ukraine (destroyed), Denmark and France (refitted), Poland
  • 1945 Silesia, Austria

Establishment of the Division…

The 25th Panzer Division was formed in Norway on 25 February 1942 from elements of the Oslo garrison. In November 1942 the division was reinforced and in July 1943 it was finally outlined as a Panzer Division. It was transferred to France by order of the Inspector-General of Armoured Troops, Heinz Guderian, as a reinforcement unit for the expected Allied invasion of France. Paradoxically, it never served on the Western Front.

Equipment…

The quality of the equipment was mixed since the division was issued with outdated French tanks, such as the Renault R35, Hotchkiss H39 and B1 bis and modern German Tiger tanks (one company) and Panzer IVs (the ‘H’ variant), (one company). The artillery regiment had modern artillery pieces, but was the size of a battalion. The reconnaissance battalion had noarmoured cars, it was made up entirely of motorcycles.

Ukraine…

The division was transferred to the Eastern Front, despite Guderian’s opposition. It was attached to the 4th Panzer Army (Army Group North Ukraine) and saw heavy fighting at Zhitomir in December 1943. The 25th Panzer Division was crushed near Kamianets-Podilskyi on the River Dniestr in the following retreat (spring 1944).

Refitting and further fighting on the Eastern Front…

In the summer of 1944 the remnants were joined by garrison units from Denmark and the division was refitted in Denmark and France. By now, the hard-pressed Wehrmacht was only able to raise a skeleton panzer division. The understrength formation was sent again to battle the Red Army at the Vistula crossings. Parts of the division were also involved in the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising. It suffered heavy casualties during the retreat to the Oder River in January 1945.

Last months of the war…

During the winter of 1945 the division’s size dwindled to that of a regiment. In late April and May 1945, it was engaged in the defense of the Ostmark (the third Reich’s name for Austria), where it was virtually destroyed.

Commanding officers…

The 24th Panzer Division was formed in 1942 from the 1st Cavalry Division based at Königsberg.

Service…

It served under the Fourth Panzer Army in Army Group South of the Eastern Front. In late December 1942 it was encircled in theBattle of Stalingrad and destroyed. It was reformed in March 1943 and served in Normandy, Italy and then went back to the Eastern Front where it suffered heavy casualties around Kiev and the Dnepr Bend. During spring-1944 it took part in the Battles of Târgu Frumos, part of the First Jassy-Kishinev Offensive. Near the end of the war it saw action in Poland, Hungary and Slovakiabefore it surrendered to the British in May 1945.

In keeping with the Division’s mounted origins, the 24th Panzer’s tank crewmen wore the golden-yellow Waffenfarbe of the cavalry rather than Panzer pink.

LIST of GERMAN DIVISIONS in WORLD WAR II – (G.22nd.P.D)

22nd Panzer Division (Germany)

Logo

The 22nd Panzer Division was a German Panzer Division in World War II. It was formed September 1941 in France. It was transferred to the southern sector of the Eastern Front in March 1942. The 22nd was the last Panzer Division to be issued with the Czech-built Panzer 38(t), which was considered under-gunned, under-armoured and obsolete by 1942.

After an initial disastrous attack on 20 March, in which the division’s units lost 30-40% of their personnel, the division remained in the Crimea and took part in Manstein’s audaciously-named Operation Bustard Hunt. In May 1942, the division was sent north to the Kharkov area and then took part in the 1942 summer offensive against Soviet forces in the Don River bend leading to the Battle of Stalingrad. The 22nd fought in the Battle of Rostov on 23 July 1942.

Together with the 1st Romanian Armoured Division (equipped with the also obsolete R2, similar to Panzer 35(t)), the 22nd Panzer Division comprised theXXXXVIIIth Panzer Corps and was next tasked with defending the northern flank of the ill-fated German 6th Army at Stalingrad. Lieutenant GeneralFerdinand Heim was the corps commander.

On November 19, 1942, Operation Uranus began. The great Soviet counter-offensive encircled the German 6th Army and much of the IVth Panzer Army and smashed the XXXXVIIIth Panzer Corps, including the 22nd Panzer Division. Many of the division’s tanks had been parked in dugouts for an extended period of time and protected from the frost by straw. When the tanks were called on to respond to the Soviet offensive, many could not be started because mice had sought refuge in the straw and then in the tanks where they chewed up the insulation of electric system wires. The ability of the division to put up effective resistance was also compromised by the prior piecemeal deployment of division assets to shore up the Romanian line.

According to Beevor, the division had as few as 30 servicable Panzer 38t’s with which to meet the onslaught of the T-34s of the Soviet 1st Tank Corps. Contradictory orders directing the panzers in two different directions only aggravated an already hopeless situation.

After desperate fighting around the Russian town of Petshany 19-22 November 1942, the 22nd was virtually destroyed with survivors making their way southwest to and across the river Chir to join various ad hoc Kampfgruppen. The 22nd Panzer Division was subsequently disbanded in April 1943.

General Heim was relieved of command and retired in disgrace only to be recalled to active duty in 1944 to command the hopeless defense of Boulogne, France.

Commanders…

  • Generalleutnant Wilhelm von Apell (25 September 1941 – 7 October 1942)
  • Generalleutnant Hellmut von der Chevallerie (7 October 1942 – 1 November 1942)
  • Generalleutnant Eberhard Rodt (1 November 1942 – 4 March 1943)
